Xperia 1 Vs iPhone XS Max Vs Xperia 1 Manual HDR | Camera Comparison

Sponsored by vodafone - 5g unlimited

Pic 1 - Landscape Shot

xperia 1 vs iphone xs camera 1.jpg
xperia 1 vs iphone xs camera 2.jpg
xperia 1 vs iphone xs camera 3.jpg

So straight out of the gate, this is a pretty challenging shot when it comes to HDR, as it was incredibly sunny that day.

On the left, the Sony Xperia 1 with its superior auto mode detects it's a landscape shot it's losing a bit detail in the shadows particularly on the crops but does well when it comes to delivering a natural picture.

The iPhone also a good picture here with its auto HDR but maybe it's over-emphasizing the brightness just a bit.

Now, do you want to see what Sony can do with HDR...

So this first attempt at a manual shot with HDR on. I adjusted the white balance that's why it has much warmer tones now...but notice how much more colours you can now see on the tree.

And here was my 2nd attempt...I prefer this one. But I'm interested to know what you think Which one wins?

Pic 2. - Selfie Camera

xperia 1 vs iphone xs camera 4.jpg

Ok, a selfie photo with the auto mode on both devices. I think at this point you probably give this one to the iPhone...but now check this.

The Xperia 1 does have manual settings for the front shooter. Although it's a bit more limited than the settings for the rear cameras...but it does offer HDR.

So immediately you see a massive difference. The parts of the image that were completely blown out in the auto mode picture are now clearly visible and it's just generally a much better picture.

Which one wins?

Pic 3. HDR Test

xperia 1 vs iphone xs camera 5.jpg
xperia 1 vs iphone xs camera 6.jpg

So the sun shining straight at me through the trees here, and you can see on both devices how they are losing detail up at the top of the photographs.

Now with HDR on in manual mode on the Sony Xperia 1, I managed to control the light a little more & bring back some of those details...as a result, it's capturing much more accurate colours at the bottom of the image too.

Pic 4 - Manual Colours

xperia 1 HDR vs Xperia 7.jpg
xperia 1 vs iphone xs camera 8.jpg

Ok, this one I'm going to do slightly differently. So on-screen are two Sony Xperia 1 images...I think you will agree. The Sony Xperia 1 is so much better when used in manual mode.

If you are an Xperia Owner give me a stone-cold he'll yeh in the comments & let me know are you using manual much mode much?

If the answer is no... Then you should learn how to.

So now do wanna see what iPhone XS max can do... Ok here it is, and whilst it's very detailed... I think you'll agree the Xperia 1 HDR is better.

Let me know if you disagree.

Pic 5 - Colour Test

xperia 1 vs iphone xs camera 9.jpg

A colourful basketball. Again the iPhone brightens the image has been brightened up nicely and has good colour saturation, but you'll notice a loss detail towards the top of the image.

So again I used manual mode with HDR and of course, I could have made the image as bright as the iPhone...but I chose not to.

I opted for faster shutter speed and darker EV level & I hope you'll agree the picture just looks better and more true to life.

That's what's great about manual settings is you have the creative control.

Pic 6. All Star BBQ

xperia 1 vs iphone xs camera 10.jpg

So this is the Charbroil all-star BBQ. I made a video about this one...it's one of those videos that I made that's quite off-topic from what I normally do...but hey...it awesome.

So once again I experimented with the settings. I opted for a darker image to bring out the deeper colours and you can see on the Charbroil logo it worked well.

Although I'll admit my manual HDR shot on the Xperia 1 looks way more stylised than the iPhone image.

The iPhone does a great job just delivering really good auto performance every time.

Pic 7. - Night Shots

xperia 1 vs iphone xs camera 11.jpg

Ok, an extreme night shot. I didn't have a tripod to hand so you'll notice a bit of blur on the Xperia image on the left but look at the difference in colours and details.

Also, the grass on the iPhone image isn't visible at all.

I just wish Sony Xperia 1 had some kind of stabilising software when taking night shots...because if it did it would have destroyed the iPhone in this one.

Let me know what you think.

Pic 8. - John Wick

xperia 1 HDR vs Xperia 12.jpg

It's John Wick and these photos are both taken on the Sony Xperia 1 because I want you guys to see how much more you can get from the Sony if you learn the manual mode and use HDR.

I just want a big thank you to you for watching. You're breathtaking.

If you guys enjoyed this one. Check out the Sony Xperia 1 Vs the OnePlus 7 pro video I made at Hyper Japan it was pretty awesome. See ya in the next one...don't be late

Sony Xperia 1 Heartbreaking Camera Comparison Vs Oneplus 7 pro | Part 2 - Night

sponsored by vodafone

Picture 1 - Alexandra Palace

xperia 1 camera vs oneplus 7_1.jpg

So this is the iconic Alexandra Palace broadcast tower which was actually where the 1st ever public television transmission was made from...anyway the picture.

So when it comes to the photo taken on the Sony Xperia 1. One area where it's doing quite well is the purple colours coming through the skylights, it's also doing a good job of brightening up the walls of the building.

However when you take a look at lights on the left side of the building. The Sony Xperia 1 seems to struggle with dynamic range. I did take this one in manual mode with HDR but struggles to control the light here.

Now when we compare the Xperia 1 photo to the OnePlus 7 Pro photo taken with its nightscape.

Automatically the OnePlus 7 Pro delivers a crispier & sharper image. the Oneplus has much more control of the dynamic range which you can see around the brightest areas of the photo. Also, the broadcast tower is much clearer and more detailed.

Now stay with me to the end, it's not all doom and gloom for the Sony Xperia 1.

Picture 2. - East Court

xperia 1 camera vs oneplus 7_2.jpg

Ok so in the setting the Sony did well. There was a street light behind and of course the light coming from the East Court entrance.

Again the Sony Xperia 1 delivers nice colours & surprisingly a brighter photo than the OnePlus 7 pro.

Again due to the way the OnePlus 7 pro handles HDR it's more detailed in the brightest areas. But you could argue a case for the Sony to winning in this scenario.

Picture 3 - Distant London

xperia 1 camera vs oneplus 7_3.jpg

So Ally Pally short for Alexandra Palace was built on one of the highest points in London. So from the Palace, you can pretty much see the entire city. It's a really nice view.

But anyway the picture.

So the Sony Xperia 1 seems to struggle in these darker lighting conditions. You notice the detail in the tree line is completely crushed, the foreground is too orange and the buildings in the distance are slightly overexposed.

The OnePlus 7 pro isn't amazing either but certainly a lot more colourful, brighter & more detailed.

So I honestly don't believe the results of the Sony photograph is the result of bad image sensors. Especially when you consider Sony make the image sensors in the OnePlus & iPhones and Samsung's and the majority of flagship devices.

The chink in Sony's armour is the image processing software. So now check this out.

Pic 3.1 - Distant London HDR

xperia 1 camera vs oneplus 7_4.jpg

I took this picture in manual mode with a 1/4 of a sec exposure time & immediately it's more colourful, much brighter, all the details in the trees in the foreground come back.

It's a little blurry because I had to shoot this one handheld...but you get the idea here. Honestly, I think Sony need to ask Google if they can borrow there night sight software... seriously I think it will change the game for this camera...

Anyway, I'll be keeping an eye out for a Gcam port to test out. I'll try to make a video on that if it happens.

So now onto some Selfy video.

Pic 4 - Ally Pally

xperia 1 camera vs oneplus 7_5.jpg
xperia 1 camera vs oneplus 7_6.jpg

So this is the front of the Palace. It's not the darkest lighting conditions, as the walkway has quite a few street lights along it.

So actually Sony Xperia 1 again does pretty well when there's some kind of light source nearby. The colours are pretty accurate on the brickwork...it's still overexposing the lights...but not bad.

The OP7 pro again puts in a stellar performance. My only tiny criticism is the image is just a little too yellow, however, it is equally as detailed and much brighter.

So I took the same picture again in manual mode on the Sony with HDR and this is what happened. So you can see it delivers a brighter image with more detail in the shadows and better colour in the sky too.

Pic 5 HDR - Extreme Night HDR

xperia 1 camera vs oneplus 7_7.jpg
xperia 1 camera vs oneplus 7_8.jpg

So I wanted to test an extreme HDR scene. So I took this picture of the street lights. With both phones using the regular camera modes.

Again the OnePlus 7 Pro is impressive even without the nightscape setting. You can see the metal bands wrapped around the light bulbs perfectly.

The Sony again with the lack of HDR on the regular camera mode suffers in extreme HDR scenarios. So now take a look at the same picture with manual settings on the Xperia and nightscape on the OnePlus.

The details came back on the Xperia and the OnePlus 7 pro takes it up another notch.

Pic 6 Lens tests -

So this next test was a request from one of you legends who watched the daylight comparison video I made at Hyper Japan 2019 in London. So here is the primary shooter on both devices...it was incredibly late hence the reason it was empty.

Primary Lens

xperia 1 camera vs oneplus 7_9.jpg

Anyway, both devices are quite similar here...I'm sure you could argue a case for either device in this photo.

Now the telephoto.

xperia 1 camera vs oneplus 7_10.jpg

The Sony keeps its orange hue and pretty good detail in the foreground and on the building but still overexposing the lights.

The OP7 pro has a dramatic difference in colours with it adding a much much cooler tone to the photo. Also, it does see much further with its optical zoom.

Now the ultrawide.

xperia 1 camera vs oneplus 7_11.jpg

The Sony keeps that orange tone whilst the OnePlus 7 pro now has a greenish tint. Very strange results on the OnePlus.

I think when it comes to the ultrawide photos I think the Sony Xperia 1 does a bit better. It has a wider field of view and it's to be more detailed especially in the foreground and around the Ally Pally sign on the left.

So guys you know I'm interested to know what you think of these results. Do think Sony can step up the Xperia 1's night capabilities with software...or do you think this is as good as it gets for us?

Let me know... What you think.

In my opinion as. Sony Xperia fan I'd love to see Sony listen to their fans and make adjustments to their software the same way in which OnePlus do.

Because when the OP7pro launched, all the big YouTubers were throwing it under the bus. Then they released the 9.5.7 update and turned it all around. I'm sure Sony could and should do the same.

Anyway if you missed the daylight comparison between the two devices the thumbnail is on screen at the end of the video. The results were completely different than this one you u got to go check it out to see what I mean.

See you in the next one...don't be late.

Sony Xperia 1 Vs Oneplus 7 Pro Camera | @ Hyper Japan 2019

So I just kick this off by thanking the sponsors of this video Vodafone.co.uk. They just launched some new unlimited 5G plans starting at around £23 per month for unlimited data...and a 5G unlimited Max plan that's £30 per month... unlimited 5G maximum speeds that's crazy.

sponsored by vodafone uk - 5g ulimited plans

Anyway shall we begin...let's begin?

Pic 1.

sony xperia 1 vs oneplsu 7 pro camera 1.jpg

So this was stalls I stumbled across and they had those cool little Japanese wooden dolls...if anyone knows the actual name for these leave that in the comments.

Anyway, it's a good warm-up photo, because the lighting was good, there's quite a lot of colours in the shot. So first off you'll notice the Sony doing an amazing job when comes to delivering rich colours

The OnePlus 7 Pro is also a great job with the brightness. You can see that clearly on the wood tones. They are just so different in the two photos.

I think when it comes to colours I've got to go with the Sony, but you might have noticed the OnePlus 7 pro is dealing with brightest areas of the photo a little better.

Pic 2.

sony xperia 1 vs oneplus 7 pro camera 2.jpg

So this is a rear camera portrait of a Japanese style waffle with ice-cream and m&ms...it was pretty damn good if I do say so myself.

Anyway when it comes to the amount of background blur. It's pretty even. When comes to edge detection the Sony Xperia 1 is just softening the top edge of the waffle just a little bit.

The OnePlus 7 Pro photo is certainly brighter and has more orange tones to it which looks great.

With that said I think the colours on the Sony Xperia 1 are more natural. So again both phones doing great in different areas.

Pic 3.

sony xperia 1 vs oneplus 7 pro camera 3.jpg

Ok... a portrait Selfy... On the OnePlus 7 Pro, it seems to be adding more blur than the Xperia 1. And you can see that in the background. the signs are just a bit less readable.

The Xperia 1 image is much warmer and I look like I have a really good tan...and that's a good thing. Maybe the Sony superior auto is beautifying the image a bit. However, when comes to the Selfy cam colours I think the OP7 pro might be more accurate.

I only say this because of the grey colour on my hoodie. It's a close one again.

Pic 4

sony xperia 1 vs oneplus 7 pro camera 4.jpg
sony xperia 1 vs oneplus 7 pro camera 5.jpg

So... This a detail test & this stand seemed to be quite popular at the show...not sure why.

Anyway. Brightness once again on the side of the OnePlus 7 Pro and the colours are just really awesome on the Sony Xperia 1.

Now let's zoom in 60% in post-production and check the details. So on closer inspection, the Xperia appears to have better sharpness with a little bit more texture.

The OnePlus 7 Pro image is much softer with less contrast. When it comes to detail there's quite a visible difference in the background...however this might be due to the aperture differences.

Which one...

Ok, now some video & audio tests. There were some Aikido demonstrations...so check the video out.

Pic 5.

sony xperia 1 vs oneplus 7 pro camera 7.jpg

So here's another selfie. Except for this time it's not my ugly mug. Instead, behold... I found a cosplayer. Now this one was taken in portrait, although there's not much in the background.

Anyway this time it's the Xperia 1 which is brighter. The highlights on the Xperia 1 image is so much brighter and you can see that on her hair.

The OnePlus 7 Pro image is much sharper all-around has great details. With that said one area the Xperia 1 is doing a great job is in the details around her eyes.

The next two images I'll leave for you guys to decide. Just put picture number and your comment.

sony xperia 1 vs oneplus 7 pro camera 9.jpg

Lens tests

sony xperia 1 vs oneplus 7 pro camera 13.jpg
sony xperia 1 vs oneplus 7 pro camera 11.jpg
sony xperia 1 vs oneplus 7 pro camera 10.jpg

Ok so both devices are triple shooters & if you didn't know the OnePlus 7 Pro actually uses Sony sensors. Anyway let's see what the 3 different lenses can do, shall we?

Ok, so this is the primary... pretty close in details. Very different in colour. Now the ultrawide. Unfortunately, the Sony wouldn't let me shoot in 1:1 aspect ratio...but look how much wider it is. Now the telephoto...the OP7 goes a little further.

And now maximum digital zoom using the zoom lens. Let me know what you think about the results here on these two triple shooter flagships.

So it's hyper Japan...and of course, I had to find a bonsai tree for you guys. I've got so say both phones are really awesome. Although I must say the Sony Xperia 1 really nails it with the colours contrast.

The OnePlus 7 Pro also does a good job but it's maybe adding just a bit too much brightness to the whites on the tree branches.

sony xperia 1 vs oneplus 7 pro camera 15.jpg

So now is the time to decide which one won! Use the poll up in the top right corner of the video. Once you do that you will see what everyone else is voting for.

Hyper Japan was awesome. I highly recommend you guys check it out if you get a chance. If you want to see these two phones head to head in a night shootout hit this thumbnail on-screen now.

Oneplus 7 Pro Google Camera Vs Stock Camera

Pic 1 Night

I think you'll agree that it's pretty close. There are a few differences I see here. 1st one being brightness on the grass on the Google camera photo, and darker shadows on the OP7 pro stock photo.

oneplus 7 pro Gcam photo 1.jpg

With stock camera photo it is losing a little detail there in the shadows but not so much it's ruining the image. You can really see what I mean when you look at the right-hand side under the tree on the Gcam pic.

Pic 2 Night

Ok, the classic up into the night sky shot. Again much brighter greens on the grass, although there is a slightly orange hue to the Gcam.

oneplus 7 pro Gcam photo 2.jpg

When you look at the concrete in the foreground on the OP7pro I believe it's a more accurate representation. Also, I do like the deeper blues in the sky on the stock photo. However, when you look a the light gradient coming from behind the tree it reaches a little further up on the Gcam photo.

Pic 3 Night

So this was a pretty extreme low light setting. What interesting here is now the OP7 sock photo has a more orange hue and the Gcam is a cooler blue.

oneplus 7 pro gcam 3.jpg

When it comes to sharpness the OP7pro stock image is better. This might be because Gcam used a slightly longer exposure the image. I'll admit this not the best picture in the world but it should give you an idea of the differences in camera software.

Pic 4 Night

So a Selfy with very dark foreground bright background. Quite a challenging condition. On the OP7pro stock photo, the camera is adjusting to the backlighting which is causing the image to darken a bit.

Night 4.jpg

Whereas the Gcam has bumped up the iso an incredible amount, which is making me much more visible but with quite a bit of noise as a result.

Pic 5 Night

Ok a No light photo. Literally, there was the tiniest amount of light coming from the left side. And here is where the Gcam shows it's true colors quite literally.

Night 5.jpg

The Stock cam used a 1/4 sec exposure and the Gcam slightly longer at 1/3. And you can the difference. Its clear win for the Gcam here.

DAY PHOTO COMPARISONS

Pic 1 Day

Immediately I'm sure you notice the orange warmer tones on the Gcam and a natural and neutral tone on the OP7pro stock. Both actually look awesome in my opinion however I prefer the blues particularly in the sky on the OP7.

day 1.jpg

Pic 2 Day

So again we see a similar trend with the warm tones on the Gcam, cooler tones on the stock. Details and background blur is almost identical so really it comes down to personal preference here. Which one would you choose as the winner here?

day 2.jpg

Pic 3 Day

So this is the portrait mode and this for me is one area that the OP7pro camera still needs improvement. I really stand quite far away for the portrait mode to kick in, and while it's delivery good background blur the focal point of the photo is a little soft and washed out.

day 3.jpg

The results of the Gcam portrait pic is interesting because the camera at the center looks amazingly sharp and the background blur looks strangely digital. I wish I had taken this shot again with the lens blur mode with the Gcam, I think the results would have been much better.

Pic 4 Day

day 4.jpg

Oqk, a selfie and there are pros and cons for both. The stock photo is well balanced although my skin tones look a little too pale. I am definitely a little more tanned than that.

However not as tanned as Gcam is showing. It seems the saturation and contrast on the Gcam is a little too high in my opinion...and it's creating a bit of graininess on my face.

Pic 5 Day

day 5.jpg

Back at the house, I took this one to test the black levels. So it's almost identical. But there's a couple of things I prefer about the Gcam image & it's the deeper reds and blacks and better details on the artificial grass. What do you think?

Pic 6 Day

It's John Wick. Now, this was kind on medium light condition. I feel saturation is higher on the stock camera. You can really see that in the blue backlighting.

day 6.jpg

The Gcam is overall brighter in all areas. If you look at John suit you will notice more details than on the stock camera. It's a minor difference, its to close to call let me know which one looks better to you.
