Xperia XZ3 Vs Huawei Mate 20 Pro | Camera Comparison

Ever wondered if the Sony Xperia XZ camera can stand up to the triple lens camera of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro? Well wonder no more… watch this WhatGear video that all begins at London’s Hyde Park Winter Wonderland.

Both these smartphones are the 2019 flagships from Sony & Huawei. So the bar is set pretty high, that is what makes this shootout really interesting. Both the Mate 20 & the Xperia XZ3 are shooting using there default settings to keep it fair. The question is which one wins? Participate in the video using the polls in the top right corner & find out if everyone else’s opinions match yours.

So the Sony XZ3 is one of the few flagships in 2019 to maintain a single lens camera, along with the Google Pixel. After testing out the amazing triple lens cameras on the Huawei P20 Pro, surely we can only expect good things from the Mate 20 pro.

I would really love to get your feedback on this video. So leave a comment below & please retweet this post if you enjoyed this WhatGear review.

The ONLY British 4K QLED TV - Cello 4K QLED 55" HDR Review

Say hello to my little friend... The Cello 55" inch 4K HDR Qled TV. The only British made Qled Smart TV on the planet today... So in usual WhatGear fashion, I'm going to break this down into 4 sections. Design, Usability, Quality and last but not least awesome features, Because I believe every product should have at least one awesome feature... Anyway, rest assured the CELLO QLED definitely does have some really awesome features. So read all the way to the end for those.

DESIGN

So when it comes to the look and feel of the CELLO 4K QLED. Cello have gone for stainless steel finish which runs right around the bezels of the TV giving a really premium look. In my opinion when it comes to wall mounting a TV, a silver finish helps it blend into environment better.

cello qled review

The base itself is solid steal as you will see in my unboxing video. click the link if you want to check that video out : Cello 4K QLED unboxing.

The TV has a lot of ports on the back, these include 4 HDMI, 2 USB and one really unique feature that I personally haven’t seen on any other TV on the market. I’ll come back to that in the awesome features section at the end.

The design on the remote is quite similar to that of the Sky Q remote when it comes to its shape. It's quite comfortable to hold and not to over complicated when it comes to buttons. Everything is quite self-explanatory & it isn't loaded with unnecessary buttons, which is nice.

Overall when it comes to the general design the Cello 4K HDR QLED has the build quality that you would expect to see on a £2000+ plus flagship TV.

USABILITY

When it comes to usability the Cello QLED boots up fast and switches between apps incredibly fast. I'm basing this statement off of my past experiences with android TV's. I have to admit the Android 7 TV interface is seamless and swift on this TV & this is assisted by the Cello Play functionality.

cello 4k qled remote.jpg

The onboard joystick control on the back is incredibly easy to find. It allows you to navigate the home screen and it doubles up as a power-up and powers down switch which is really great. In my experience, there is nothing worse than having to get a torch out to look behind the TV in order to figure out what buttons are what.

The remote has an awesome feature that I have to unveil early and that is the mouse pointer. Which you can toggle on and off as you please. When it comes to smart TV's and on-screen keyboards it's some much easier just to point and click. Which is particularly useful for skipping ads on YouTube. By the way, check out the WhatGear YouTube channel when you get a chance ;) I'd really appreciate it.

QUALITY

Inside the CELLO 55” QLED is a Samsung SVA QLED panel. The equivalent 55" Samsung QLED retail price starts at £2000 here in the UK. Prepare to be amazed when you see the price tag on this QLED TV.

The TV houses a system on chip AMLogic 962, ARM Cortex A53 quad core CPU @1.5GHz processor & 5 core ARM Mali-450 GPU with 2GB Ram. As well as 8GB built in storage for apps.

Quantum Dot LED technology boasts a wider colour gamut than regular LED screens. You can see it in action in my WhatGear YouTube review here. I was really blown away by the color reproduction, in particular, the reds.

clarity.jpg

When watching 4K footage you can see every detail in crystal clarity, brilliant colours and didn't experience any problems with motion blur. Overall the picture quality is awesome.

Another area that surprised me was the sound quality. Nowadays most people will opt to buy a separate sound bar...I am one of those people. Although I did spend some time watching this TV without one. I was pleasantly surprised to see the Cello have added in some impressive speakers, which I think is quite rare these days. Thumbs up to Cello for that.

AWESOME FEATURES

The 1st awesome feature I should mention is the ability to expand the built-in 8BG memory with a micro-sd card. This is really great because if you are the owner of a smartphone that allows for an sd-card, you can transfer images and videos very easily. Also expanding the memory will allow you to make use of the record feature when watching TV via the cello play TV tuner.

cello qled ports

The 2nd awesome feature is the fact that this is near to stock Android 7 TV. I didn't notice any bloatware at all. You can link your android play store account to the TV and download pretty much all the apps you can find on your android phone...I think this is awesome!

The 4K QLED HDR10 panel inside this TV delivers an amazing picture. Which 4K TV and Film becoming more readily available these days you can make the most out of your content. You might want to consider upgrading you SKY Q package to Ultra HD of buying a 4K Blu-ray player if you are planning on picking up this TV.

Another awesome feature is the pointer remote. I mentioned it earlier but I feel it deserves another mention. Navigating web pages is so easy with this feature. I really like the way you can toggle it on and off too.

The last awesome feature is the price. prepared to be amazed click here to find out the latest price.

No Headphone Jack... No Problem - Qualcomm AptX Adaptive is Here

So when it comes to audio Codecs Qualcomm have been developing the APTX technology for over 30 years. The AptX codec has even been used in mainstream cinematography, for example, the legendary Steven Spielberg used AptX codecs in the production of Jurassic Park.

QC_aptX_Vertical_Black_4754.png

Back then AptX was only available in the professional filmmaking industry. Fast forward to today, 4 out of 5 consumer devices support some form of AptX audio. There is, in fact, more than 1 Billion devices in existence right now supporting AptX.

So what’s NEW with the recently announced Qualcomm AptX Adaptive codec? Just to skim the surface, Qualcomm has had a focus on three main areas for improvement. The Robustness, The Audio quality and of course... the answer smartphone gamers nightmare latency (LAG).

Qualcomm Aptx Adaptive review

Robustness - UPGRADED

The Qualcomm AptX codec will be fully backward compatible. Meaning the original AptX & AptX HD codecs are also supported. AptX Adaptive will intelligently adapt to RF signal strengths and the file source you are using. This will give your device the ability to make adjustments on the fly to deliver the best audio playback experience your device is capable of.

The bad news is this AptX codec will only available for devices supporting Android P, so if you’re a bit of an audiophile & you’re still rocking an older Android device that’s not going to support Android P in the future….then now might be the time to upgrade.

Audio Quality - IMPROVED

So with the new adaptive capabilities of the new AptX, we will see...or should I say hear an improvement in an audio quality. So if you’re listening to CD quality / HiRes audio files you will really hear very near to the full quality on launch date.

aptx adaptive hi res audio

AptX Adaptive will support playback up to 24bit/48kHz, and I heard in the near future Qualcomm will be scaling that up to 24bit/96kHz. So you're going to get audio delivered amazingly close to that of the original artists recording.

LATENCY - LESS LAG

The AptX Adaptive codec will help reduce time delays between your bluetooth audio device and the source. I have experienced this first hand with bluetooth devices in the past. There is nothing worse than watching a YouTube video with audio completely out of sync.

This can be a huge problem especially if you are using bluetooth headphones when gaming on a smart device. With the AptX adaptive codec it will be able to adjust seamlessly by reading the metadata and external stimuli to make sure you do not experience audio lag. I really like the sound of this and can’t wait to test it out.

Sony WH-1000XM3 Vs Sony WH-1000XM2 - Should You Upgrade

Many people consider the new Sony WH-1000XM3 to be the very best wireless noise-canceling ever made...to date. If your the proud owner of a pair of Sony WH-1000XM2's then you're probably wondering if it's worth spending the money on the upgrade & palming your old cans off to a relative as a Christmas present). Well between you & I...I currently have both, so I'm going to tell you.

Current price - sony 1000xm3

DESIGN

sony wh-1000xm3 review.jpg

The styling of the Sony 1000XM3 has changed a little bit. At a glance, the first thing you will notice is the embossed Sony logo is now slightly embellished with a rose gold. Also, Sony has highlighted the external mics with the same gold finish.

sony wh1000xm3 earcups.jpg

The size of the earpieces has slightly shrunk giving them a slightly slimmer profile. On the insides of the earpieces, they have kept the plush padding as before but this time giving you more room for your ears. Unless you are fortunate enough to have massive ears, your ears should fit entirely inside them.

The headband has been improved too. The Sony WH1000XM2 now have more padding than before & Sony have decided you lose the silver band that used to run across the top.

The onboard buttons have been adjusted also. There are still only two buttons but this time they are raised, more clearly marked and easier to find. NOW the 1000XM3 have USB-C which means faster charging (more on this later).

sony 1000xm3 usb c.jpg

The texture on the earpieces has also changed. On the Sony WH-1000XM2 we saw a leather style finish. Which I thought was quite nice as it prevented the headphones from becoming fingerprint magnets, however, I heard it did affect the touch controls a little.

I also heard that the hinges on the 1000X mark 3 have been more reinforced due to rumors of them cracking on earlier models... I really didn't want to put them through a stress test to find out...I'm sure someone will sooner or later.

USABILITY

So I mentioned the buttons have improved making switching between noise canceling modes easier than ever. The touch controls have also improved due to the change of texture on the earcups. The same functionality applies. Swipe up & down for volume, left & right to skip tracks, double tap to pause/play and hold for your AI assistant.

xm3.jpg

Also, the hand over the earcup to disengage and amplify you surroundings is still present.

So... one of the biggest complaints that I hear from the WhatGear audience is that the mics for voice calls were not very good on the 1000XM2. I've tested both and I think Sony has made some improvements in this area. I'll have to test this in different environments to really see just how much they have improved.

As the app improves so does the functionality. The same features will roll out to the Sony 1000XM2's at the same time as the Sony 1000XM3's. However, the 1000XM3's now had a barometer that measures the atmospheric pressure. This is visible within the app, and it will let you know what it's doing... so that new.

sony nfc.jpg

NFC Is still present. While you still only connect to one device at a time, NFC makes it really quick and easy to connect devices with a simple tap on the back of the earcup. It’s so much easier than navigating to your bluetooth settings and connecting that way.

Overall the usability of the new Sony WH 1000X has improved!

QUALITY

So the most notable improvement when it comes to sound quality is the serious amount of bass the new 1000XM3 can deliver. I was quite honestly blown away the first time I threw on the new Eminem album in the FLAC audio format.

Like the 1000XM2 the new Sony headphones support Sony's proprietary LDAC Hi-Res audio streaming. Currently supporting 24Bit/96Khz playback over Bluetooth...I have Qualcomm are about to catch up but that's another story.

the best noise cancelling headphones

The Sound quality is just amazing! It was awesome before on the mark 2's but there have been some notable improvements right across the board when it comes to sound quality. The amount of noise that can be cancelled is now even better than before with the mark 3’s now being able to block out more sounds around the normal vocal range. I walked down a very busy street in London with full noise cancelling on… I could not hear a damn thing!

AWESOME FEATURES

So the first awesome feature is the addition of the barometer. Now this headphones will know what the atmospheric pressure is around you and adjust the sound accordingly. You will be hard pushed to find a better pair of air travel headphones than these right now... sorry Bose QC.

00087.MTS.00_00_33_06.Still002.jpg

The touch controls on the side of the earcup eliminate the need for loads of buttons. There is nothing worse than having to take off the headphones to find little fiddly buttons, especially in low light conditions. Simple swipe gestures solve that problem. The sensitivity has improved from the mark 2's as I mentioned earlier.

sony wh-1000xm3 vs Wh1000xm2.jpg

The overall look and feel of the headphones are spot on. When wearing them they feel light, comfortable. They feel durable when you're not wearing them & compact down into a really nice fairly small protective case when not in use.

The addition of the upgrade to USB C is a huge improvement. Now just 10mins charge will give you 5Hrs playback. This is just so awesome. For example, if you mainly use the Sony WH-1000XM3 to commute to and from work, throw them on charge for 10mins before you leave the house and you are pretty much set for the entire day...WOW.

Should you upgrade...

well it depends on how much you can sell your old Sony WH1000XM2's for.

Next-Gen Smartwatches are Here! Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100

30 days of battery life on a smartwatch...Impossible... until now! Qualcomm are about to change the smartwatch game, & the time is now. Enter the Snapdragon Wear 3100 processor.

There were just a few 1st generation smartwatches on the market. I actually went out and got one. Do you know what the the biggest problem that I had with this smartwatch... when it ran out of power it became pretty stupid.

Good news! Times they are changing & Qualcomm just announced the next generation smarter smart-wear processor. The Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100.

Qualcomm is actually the number 1 player in the smartwatch market with around 200 available smartwear devices and that's about 80% market share in wearables.

1st GEN Smartwear

snapdragon wear 400.jpg

So we had the 1st gen, which was just a handful of watches from manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Huawei, Motorola ect. The majority of these devices were running on the Qualcomm Snapdragon wear 400 platform. Qualcomm pioneered the wearable tech processor successfully, but still battery life was a problem.

2nd GEN Smartwear

snapdragon wear 2100.jpg

Then came the 2nd generation smartwear. Qualcomm Snapdragon wear 2100 platform ushered in a new wave of watches. With sports brands & designers like LV, Michael Kors and many other big designer brands getting onboard the smartwear train.

NEXT GEN Smartwear

Now let's talk 3gen... Starting this year 2018. Qualcomm has designed this new smart-wear processor from the ground up. I think this could be the time now for smartwear to blow up. Not literally...you know what I mean.

Snapdragon wear 3100 .jpg

So it's here. The all-new Qualcomm Snapdragon 3100 platform. This new chip has a similar a7 processor the Snapdragon Wear 2100, but this time there are 4 of them, as well as an all-new DSP and most significantly a new ultra-low power co-processor. This co-processor will allow your smartwatch to remain smart for much much longer.

For example, if you go for a designer smartwatch...and you mainly just use it for telling the time and some basic notifications and apps...then you could see your smartwatch lasting up to 30 days on a single charge. That is just awesome.

google wear snapdragon 3100.jpg

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 3100 does this by switching back and forth between the power-hungry A7 processors and DSP when needed and the new ultra low Co-processor. Which uses 20times less power.

This new platform is going to improve battery life right across the board, if you're using your watch for sports with HR monitor on & GPS on, you're going to get around 5 times more battery life than the 2nd gen sports watches.

I'm really excited to see what the OEM's can do with this new technology. I have been waiting a long time to see a smartwatch that could interest me enough to purchase a new smart timepiece. Maybe that time is now.

I'll be on the lookout for these new Snapdragon wear 3100 devices to review, so make sure you subscribe to the WhatGear YouTube Channel for updates.

The Best Mic for Streaming - The Blue Yeti Nano

I hear when it comes to YouTube videos audio quality is almost more important than the quality of your video footage. Well, at least they taught me at YouTube Space London.

That's why this new Blue Microphone is so exciting for me. I've been looking to step up my audio game for a while & I heard this might be one of the best mics for podcasters. I also heard this will be one of the best mics for game streamers too. So If you're a gamer you are going to want to check out the WhatGear video on the Blue Yeti Nano...you will like it, even more, when you see the price.

Blue Yeti NANO - PRICE

Design

best mic for streaming on youtube.jpg

So this a Yeti Nano mic, is much...much smaller than its big brother the original Yeti that stands at about 30cm's tall and weighs in a 3.3lbs (1.55 kg) with stand. The Blue Yeti Nano comes in at just 21cm tall and weighs 1.39lbs (0.63 kg).  Yes, it's in a lower weight class but do not underestimate its power.

The reduced size & weight makes the Blue Nano microphone much more portable and will free up a lot of important desk space (for even more gadgets). The Blue Yeti Nano is so much easier to transport and setup than the gigantic original blue Yeti.

If you a game streamer or podcaster your might be using a mic that sits in front of your face, maybe your current mic even partially blocks you from your camera. The reduced footprint of the Yeti Nano will allow your viewers to see more of you without compromising any of that all important audio quality.

I'm loving the Yeti Nano's awesome new design. It's far less rounded than its bigger brother & better looking than the Blue Snowball. Blue have added some nice angles to it this time which in my opinion will make it look nicer on camera.

That entire mic casing is made up of premium metals including the stand. They've also added a notch to the stand so that the cable can run underneath it tidily. If you are planning on using the stand that comes with the Nano, you will be happy to know this has 1/4" thread mount built in & comes with 3/4" adapter just in case. If you're not going to be using a boom arm or mic stand.

Blue Microphones have streamlined the onboard user interfaces on the Yeti Nano, keeping the design really sleek and premium without sacrificing its functionality. More on the functionality in the usability section.

So the design, in summary, the Blue Yeti Nano doesn't feel cheap at all & it does feel like it could take few knocks without it falling apart... this could be handy if you need to rage quit during a gaming session. Right now you can find the Blue Yeti Nano in Shadow Grey, Vivid Blue, Red Onyx & Cubano Gold... I like the stealthy look of the shadow grey.

Usability

When it comes to the onboard controls on the Yeti Nano, Blue have streamlined it down in comparison to the big Yeti. On the front is a dial for adjusting your headphone volume & this same dial doubles up a mute button. The nice little LED circle you see on the dial itself is used as an indicator and lets you know what's happening. Green indicating you ready to go, Red for when you're muted and yellow when the mic is updating.

On the back of the mic you a single button that will allow you to switch between the two pickup patterns. Cardioid for when it's you and your Yeti Nano (ideal for game streamers) and Omni for when there's a few around the mic and you want to pick audio from all around (ideal for podcasters). If you hold the pickup button down for 2 secs it will also alow you to toggle on and off the playback monitoring as well. At its base you will also find the USB B port for connecting this to your computer.

blue microphones sherpa app.jpg

Now you're probably thinking that all sounds great but what about Gain adjustments? now there is no physical gain control onboard the Yeti Nano, however, the NEW Blue Sherpa app will let adjust the mic's sensitivity via your computer. Blue do initially set the gain to the recommended level out of the box so there's a good chance you may never need to adjust it. Also available on the Blue Sherpa app is the option to switch the pickup patterns, adjust your headphone levels, select between the audio quality settings and mute playback completely.

If you're going to be using this mic for Skype and other conferencing apps, it most cases the software you will be using will use an auto gain feature. So no need to worry about firing up sherpa for these scenarios

Also through the Sherpa app, you the mic will receive updates from time to time that will further improve the performance of this mic in the future.

Quality

This is a Mic and you are here because you want to know if this is a good option in comparison to the Big Yeti?

best mic for youtube.jpg

The answer to that is yes this is a really good option, the Nano is virtually indistinguishable from the original Yeti if you use the mics side by side in cardioid or omni pick up modes.

This doesn't, however, make the aforementioned big Yeti mic redundant as there are some differences. The Yeti Nano has two condenser mic capsules inside, whereas the big Yeti has a triple capsule array. The big Yeti also has a couple for pickup patterns, bidirectional and stereo... which to be honest you might not need if you're just looking for a mic for streaming or YouTube voice overs. The Nano does have an advantage of the Blue Snowball however as both had two pickup patterns but the Nano has the direct monitoring feature built in.

The Nano supports up to 24bit/48kHz recording which is what most operating systems support. Recording at this sample rate is going to give you a really crystal clear & proffesional recording of your vocals or instruments.

Awesome Features

This microphone has definitely been designed this with YouTube streamers in mind, as they have also added a little bit of embossed branding on the back of the mic stand. Giving the Nano mic a little bit of bling if you're going to be using this for video...and like that.

blue mic yeti nano review.jpg

If you have an OTG adapter you can even plug this into an android device. This combined with it's more compact stature means you can basically setup a really high quality podcast studio virtually anywhere. Of course, bare in mind compatibility will vary from device to device (If you have a prehistoric android it may not work!) make sure you look into that if that's how you want to use this mic.

The direct monitoring feature I think is an awesome new addition. This is going to be particulary useful it doing multi-track recording, or recording VO over a backing track for example. Really awesome.

Also the fact that mic will automatically be recognised by most of the popular recording software out there like Garageband, Soundcloud, audacity, makes the Blue Yeti Nano really easy to use... and maybe the best mic for streaming in 2018.

Sony RX100 VI Camera - Top 5 NEW Features

So if you're wondering whether it is worth upgrading your old Sony RX100 compact camera to the latest version the RX100 MK6, then you better know what you are paying for. Especially when you consider the Sony RX100 V is now basically half the price.

I've used older versions of the epic RX100 camera in the past & more recently I've been using the Sony RX100 VI on my travels. I even time out of my precious holiday time to make a WhatGear YouTube video finding out how the Huawei P20 Pro's triple lens camera faired against the mighty RX100 Mark 6. The results were actually REALLY interesting. Click this link if you want to check it out the video: Smartphone Vs Compact Camera.

So back to the reasons why you might seriously want to consider the RX100 2018 model, here a 5 Top new features of the Sony RX100 VI compact camera.

1. Electronic EVF - One Touch Feature

Previous versions of the RX100 all had this & I must admit it's a really awesome feature, being able to look down the viewfinder to get a closer look at how you shot is composed. This is especially helpful when you want to get your subject in focus or get that really nice Bokeh (blurry background effect). Older versions of Sony's compact powerhouse required you to pop up the OLED EVF and pull it towards you before you can use it. Sony has now designed the new electronic viewfinder to pop up and extend towards you in one fluid motion. When you pop the EVF it will automatically turn on the camera like before, and when you push it down it will switch off... like before. It's just a bit easier now, just one touch. I don't get much easier than that.

2. Improved Continuous Shooting Feature

The Sony RX100V had an epic 150 shots at 24FPS. With the new RX100 mark 6 Sony have stepped it up again. This version now supports 233 shots at 24 frames per second. This combined with the amazing autofocus capabilities of the RX100 range makes this perfect for capturing those fleeting moments. For example sports or weddings ect. Beware though...use this feature too much your going to find your memory card full very quickly.

3. 90 degrees downward LCD

So this camera is just so awesome because of how small it is. Many consider this to be the best compact camera for bloggers. I would agree. This feature is an awesome addition because now you can shoot directly downward while still being able to see perfectly what you are shooting. The LCD still flips 90 degrees upward like before for those all-important selfies, but this new feature means you can now take even better pictures of your food for example...now that I ever do that ;)

4. Touch screen capabilities

So this feature...I really feel like Sony are holding back on. As is one other major feature I'll mention at the end. Touchscreen tech has evolved so much but for some reason, Sony has taken the slow lane with this one. However...good news! We finally have touchscreen capabilities on the Sony RX100 mk6.  They are quite limited but you can now focus your photo using the LCD and even snap photos. So that's a good thing, I just wish Sony would allow us to navigate the menus too.

5. New Zoom - Zeiss 24mm to 200mm lens

So some of you may like this new feature & some may not. If you're looking for a slightly better depth of field photo, then maybe you should stick with your Sony RX100 V. However if capturing beautiful images from further away is your thing then this should make your eyes light up. During my time using the Sony RX100 VI, I must say I was really impressed. The zoom feature is super smooth and even on maximum zoom, the photos look like you were standing right next to the subject. Really awesome.

Could it be Better?

So that's my top 5 new features, there are loads more of cool stuff I could mention about this camera but for the sake of not making this too long I won't. I'll just say this, in my opinion, this is the best point and click camera right now. There are just two things Sony really need to do to make this better for a UK tech YouTuber like me...add more features to the touchscreen & for the love of god add in a mic jack!
